Seafood Lunch in Costa Nova – Day 2 in Aveiro

Breakfast buffet @ 7:30 a.m. Apparently we are only guests today.

Walking around the park for 30 minutes

Took a bus for 30 minutes to Costa Nova

Colorful and stripped houses are so pretty

After checking all the restaurants on the main street, we settled in one with the famous eel dish for a better price

Starting with Sapateira (crab) and drink. He had a draft beer and I had a half bottle of vinho verde.

It’s very rare to see a dog not behaved well like this in Portugal.

This is what we wanted to try. “Caldeirada de Enguias,” a pot of eel stew. It looks intimidating but tastes very good. Eel is so fluffy and flavorful.

The dog was cute and curious. After dessert and cafe, total was 63.70€.

Back to hotel room, took a rest and walked a bit in town. In the evening we took an easy like drinking tea and watching TV in the hotel. We are so used to live without having dinner. Less opportunity to enjoy food. Kind of sad but feels healthier.

Lunch: BBQ Chicken Family Combo, rice and fries included (10€), small mix salad (2€), Picanha (6.50€) @ 12:30 p.m.

Sake & Soba @ Friends’ House

Invited to friends’ house: Starting with Sake, they brought from Japan. We love sake. Yay!

Japanese delicacies such as eel bone chips, nori, dried squid etc along with sake. Then we had soba, sangria, ham, cheese, Portuguese white wine, queijada, fruits, baked banana etc. It was a blast!

Opening a box of truffles from Chocolataria Equador @ 11:00 a.m., So good 🙂

Tomar Cafe na Esplanada

Meeting a new friend for the first time at cafe in a park. It’s not typical me but I have made several friends through online during the pandemic. I hit it off with some of them by regularly having “Zoom” meetings. We spent 2.5 hours in the terrace and I had strawberry lemonade, latte & cheesecake :p

We went to the supermarket at El Corte Ingles. She showed me all the good stuff. There was a wine specialist, Jorge who answers customer’s questions and suggests which wine would be good for them. I bought one bottle, I was looking for and another, he recommends. I really wanted to try empanadas (empadas in Portuguese) in the last photo, but my husband and I don’t eat in the evening, so I will wait for the next time.

Breakfast: Bolo de chocolate, orange, coffee @ 7:40 a.m., Pizza bread with wine @ 10:50 a.m., Anchovy & garlic pasta @ 11:35 a.m.

It was not a good idea to open a bottle before a 30 minute walk to the park, but I couldn’t resist. This is an organic wine and it’s fairly good but not a wow factor.

Vinho Gatão Rosé

Am I vinhoholic!? (vinho = wine in Portuguese) Today we don’t have a stock of wine and I was not going to drink but felt so depressed…Then I ran to buy some bottles in the afternoon and enjoyed snacking around 4:00 p.m. Btw, the weather is weird, so warm and news warned a bad air quality because of PM10 from Africa…

Breakfast: Portuguese croissant with chocolate sauce and cream cheese, apple, coffee @ 7:15 a.m.

Soup @ 10:20 a.m.

This is our favorite bread, Trigo from Terrapão (3€). It’s huge and probably weighs 750g-1kg. Crispy outside, soft and chewy inside.

Appetizer: Trigo, pizza bread with olive and chouriço, wine @ 1:00 p.m. This wine is one of my favorite, which is available at Pingo Doce and I buy it when it’s discounted.

Lunch: Spaghetti meat sauce

Frango Panado (Portuguese Chicken Katsu)

Wine tasting & snacking @ 11:00 a.m., I love a couple of Freixo reds and chardonnay, so why not try Freixo Chardonnay (11€) !? To be honest, it’s good but my expectation was too great to exceed…Or maybe there are too many good and cheaper wines in Portugal. Or Chardonnay was my favorite white in California but Encruzado and Verdelho are my new favorite here in Portugal.

Lunch: Frango Panado with salad @ 1:10 p.m. At first round I enjoyed the chicken simply with salt and lemon.

Second round: Japanese style, with rice, tonkatsu sauce and some green

In the afternoon, we walked to Saldanha area to get some Japanese grocery.

Dashi soy sauce, shredded nori, ramen, green tea soba, dogtooth violet starch, total 23.41€, Japanese grocery is much more expensive with much less variety comparing to Los Angeles. What I miss most about life in LA is 1) Asian food and 2) Driving (surprisingly!)
