Chop Steak (Costeletas)

Breakfast: Caldo verde, rustic bread & butter @ 8:15 a.m.

We went to a supermarket after breakfast. In Lisbon most supermarkets have seafood sections like this. Isn’t it amazing!?

Picked up our favorite bread as well. It tastes simply like wheat by the slow fermentation process. This huge bread, probably 500-750g with a lot of love costs only 3€.

“Lanchar” (Snacking in Portuguese) @ 11:00 a.m.

Lunch: Chop steak (Costeletas) with yellow bell pepper, red wine @ 1:40 p.m.

Chocolate time!

Evening snack: Soba @ 5:00 p.m.

Ginja/Ginjinha, Portuguese cherry liquor @ 5:15 p.m.

Relaxing At Home Alone

I slept in till 9am this morning and got up when he left for a conference.

As usual I made tea for myself and did laundries.

Portuguese Tapas Night At Home

IMG_2447
We were taking easy and enjoying wine and tapas this evening. Starting @ 5:30pm. Queijo Fresco and Presunto (fresh cheese and prosciutto)

Fresh cheese tastes mild and smooth like dessert. Not sweet but texture is like pudding. 5 or 6 pieces of prosciutto was 1€.

I was going to try a really cheap Portuguese wine between 1-2€, but I was not brave enough and chose one 5€ from Douro. Very smooth and easy to drink.

IMG_2448
Sauteed Chouriço with garlic, onion and bell pepper. He loved this dish.

IMG_2449
We tried Sardine Pate, a friend recommends

IMG_2451
Very fishy but I love it. He doesn’t.

Lunch @ Sabores Da Penha

He suggested to go to one of our favorites for lunch today. It’s located on top of hill but we need to go pick up the rest of our stuff at Airbnb nearby, so it was actually a great idea.

IMG_2361
We ordered pratos do dia and two glass of wine, red for him and white for me. The lady asked us if “natural (room temperature)” is ok. I asked for “fresco (chilled)” instead. We understood almost everything she said and it was so smooth to choose side order. I was tearing because we knew nothing at the first time here.

IMG_2362
Glasses are full of wine as always. Portuguese wine never disappoints us!

IMG_2366
Mine: Tiras de chocos con arroz e salada 5€

IMG_2367.jpg
His: Alheira con ovo 5€ (bread sausage under egg)

IMG_2370.jpg
If they don’t have Doce da Casa, we would skip a dessert but they did! Happy!!! It’s interesting to taste Doce da Casa at all different restaurants. This one tastes more cream instead condensed milk.

IMG_2372.jpg
Cafe cheio is so good too!

Total: 15.10€ + 1€ tip

The gentleman in the counter thought I was Chinese and was so surprised when I told him I didn’t speak Chinese. Japanese is so minor in the world and I share a hurtful feeling when a Portuguese person is being confused with Spanish…

Menu do Dia @ Ideal

We finally got a key for our new apartment, but haven’t moved completely because of no internet there yet.

I was waiting for Vodafone at new apartment while he was working at Airbnb. Vodafone was supposed to come and install it between 8:30-11:30 today but somehow they rescheduled for 11:30-2:30 tomorrow.

He joined me there and we went out for lunch at the restaurant we had the first meal a month ago.

IMG_2192
They have Menu do Dia for 8.50€. Yay!

IMG_2182
Starting with sopa and bebidas.

IMG_2185
Mine: Vitela Assada, the server asked me what side I wanted and what I only recognize his saying was “batata frita (frech fries).”

IMG_2186
His: Espetadas de carne na brasa

IMG_2188.jpg
I tried something new, Molotoff (meringue pudding). Very light with 90% of air 🙂

IMG_2189
His: Pudding

IMG_2190.jpg
I tried ‘Carioca,’ secondhand espresso too. It’s good but no crema. It tastes like brewed coffee. Of course, cheio is better.

IMG_2193
This place could be our regular but I don’t feel attached as much as calçada 28 yet.

Later the day, we went to power company (EDP) and Water company (EPAL) to change the name on the contracts with our realtor. She has been very helpful.

We walked down the Avenida da Liberdade and had a break for ice cream at the end of avenue.

IMG_2207
Her favorite ice cream shop and it’s the oldest in Lisbon

IMG_2208
Such a charming place. They close from Christmas season to March because no one wants ice cream in winter.

Croissant c/Doce D’ovo & Choco Fritto

We went to Setúbal by train because he had an appointment at SEF.

IMG_1794
Train was supposed to leave Areeiro-Roma Station @ 7:43am but 7:49am. Then the train stopped on the half way and we had to take Uber to Stúbal 😦

IMG_1823
While he was at SEF, I walked around the town, which is famous for Choco Fritto (Fried Cuttlefish).

IMG_1883.jpg
I was hungry and had a croissant & meia de leite (latte) alone around 10:30am.

IMG_1886
Portuguese love making everything sweet. This one got doce de ovos (egg cream) inside. So good 🙂

IMG_1934
He finished the appt around 11:15am and we killed time till noon when all restaurants opened for lunch.

IMG_1935
Salada 2.50€, Tomato tastes much better than in the US. Most salad got only olive oil and salt, but tastes amazing.

IMG_1936
Picanha (Brazilian Beef) 12€, It was good but we feel it overpriced since our favorite place offer 8€ lunch course including a main course better than this.

IMG_1938
Choco Fritto (a half portion) 8.50€, It was actually ok. I prefer smaller squid for cruncher texture and more flavor.

Total was 25€. I think we should stick to places the locals go even when it’s the first time to be there in town. It would be a bit intimidating but be absolutely better experience not only lower price but also we would know what real food is there.

IMG_1718.jpg
Mine: Bife à parmegiana con salada & arroz (5 euros)

I initially ordered escalope de vitela (veal escalope), but it was run out before my order reached to the kitchen.

I loved my dish besides it was not warm enough.

IMG_1719
Now we feel dessert is a must

IMG_1720.jpg
Coffee too.

IMG_1721
Here is the total. We left an euro on the table and the server didn’t realize it was a tip. Of course she looked happy when we told her that would be for her.

I think I am going to skip dinner today.

My Birthday Lunch @ Calçada 28

I had been thinking where to go for my birthday lunch last couple weeks since he asked me. There are so many places I want to try in Lisbon, especially city center, but it seems so overpriced since we found the great deals of lunch special in our neighborhood (more local/residential area). So I concluded that we should go to one of our favorites around here because we are moving to a new apartment next week and it would be less to come around here.

IMG_1569
We checked the daily special at the closest restaurant on the middle of hill. If anything had looked good, we would have gone to the other one, but I saw a dish I wanted.

IMG_1570.jpg
We started with Red wine with bread and olives as usual. So many gentlemen were enjoying their lunch and wine too.

IMG_1572
This is my choice, Arroz de Pato.

IMG_1573.jpg
His: Espetadas Acheira

IMG_1575
My duck rice tastes amazing! It reminds me of grandma’s takikomi-gohan, a Japanese mixed rice.

We thought too much food to finish, but we took our time and did! It was so delicious 🙂

IMG_1577
Couldn’t finish 0.5L wine tho…

IMG_1578
My dessert: Mousse de Manga, his: Doce da Casa

IMG_1581
I ordered ‘cafe normal (regular espresso)’. It was stronger but still manageable and good.

Another great lunch experience for 8 euros per person. We still can’t believe how wonderful this deal is!!!

We walked to Saldanha area to pick up an insurance card at the agency.

IMG_1591
Checking Mercado de 31 Janeiro

IMG_1592
There was a nice pastry shop in the market.

IMG_1595
Also a special shop for spices, dry fruits and teas. I would come back here to get some teas.

IMG_1597
After a quick stop by the agency, we went to a mall to look for a pair of shoes for him in Saldanha.

IMG_1600
We decided to walk 10 minutes to another mall. On the way, there was a menu board for great deal of snacking and drinks.

IMG_1601
Our favorite mall, El Corte Inglés

IMG_1608
Then we found cute shoes! I love them.
