We went to Setúbal by train because he had an appointment at SEF.
Train was supposed to leave Areeiro-Roma Station @ 7:43am but 7:49am. Then the train stopped on the half way and we had to take Uber to Stúbal 😦
While he was at SEF, I walked around the town, which is famous for Choco Fritto (Fried Cuttlefish).
I was hungry and had a croissant & meia de leite (latte) alone around 10:30am.
Portuguese love making everything sweet. This one got doce de ovos (egg cream) inside. So good 🙂
He finished the appt around 11:15am and we killed time till noon when all restaurants opened for lunch.
Salada 2.50€, Tomato tastes much better than in the US. Most salad got only olive oil and salt, but tastes amazing.
Picanha (Brazilian Beef) 12€, It was good but we feel it overpriced since our favorite place offer 8€ lunch course including a main course better than this.
Choco Fritto (a half portion) 8.50€, It was actually ok. I prefer smaller squid for cruncher texture and more flavor.
Total was 25€. I think we should stick to places the locals go even when it’s the first time to be there in town. It would be a bit intimidating but be absolutely better experience not only lower price but also we would know what real food is there.
I had a monthly online meeting with three friends in the US. It was very nice to see them and chat with them.
4:45am: Yogurt right before I joined the meeting
Breakfast @ 8am: Omelette, Muffin & Tea
We went to Calçada 28 again for lunch.
Pratos do Dia, Daily Specials
Olives are so good here and generally in Portugal
0.5L wine for a person. I love the house wine here comparing to other restaurants.
Mine: Massada de Peixe (Seafood Pasta). Unfortunately, my first choice, fish frrito was already sold out, but this is so delicious. Oven-baked ribs looked good too.
His: Panados de Frango con Esparguete, this looks so simple, but tastes much better than I expected. Spaghetti has a slight lemon flavor and chicken is so crispy.
Sobremesas: Doce da Casa e Mousse de Coco
Cafe Cheio
Total: 16 euros
Dinner @ 6:40pm: Chicken Soup with Rice and Couscous
I finally contacted a language school to go to a trial class tomorrow. Exciting!
Went to one of three favorites for lunch
Starting with a glass of red wine, fruity one
His: Bitoque de Porco con salada & Batata (5 euros)
Mine: Bife à parmegiana con salada & arroz (5 euros)
I initially ordered escalope de vitela (veal escalope), but it was run out before my order reached to the kitchen.
I loved my dish besides it was not warm enough.
Now we feel dessert is a must
Coffee too.
Here is the total. We left an euro on the table and the server didn’t realize it was a tip. Of course she looked happy when we told her that would be for her.
Because it was clear today, we went out for a best pasteis de nata, vodafone shop and pollux for home goods.
It’s said that this is one of best places for Pasteis de Nata.
11:50am on Saturday, there was no line but quite full inside.
Menu Board
You can see the process of nata making
Warm, crispy and creamy… 🙂
Cafe cheio x2 & Pasteis de Nata x 2 = 3.40 euros
It’s good with cinnamon powder too.
Lunch @ Sabor Gaucho, Brazilian Steakhouse
Prato do Dia, Chicken + Water (5.90 euros)
Mine: Mista de Carnes + Water (7.60 euros)
After lunch, we checked out Pollux for towels, sheets or other home goods since we are moving into a new place next week. Figuring out if we should go Ikea or Pollux.
7:30am: Pão de Ló from Pingo Doce, a supermercadoIt’s said that this is an origin of Castella, Japanese sponge cake famous in Nagasaki. It doesn’t taste same but more like pound cake (lighter and less sweet). I love it.
I had been thinking where to go for my birthday lunch last couple weeks since he asked me. There are so many places I want to try in Lisbon, especially city center, but it seems so overpriced since we found the great deals of lunch special in our neighborhood (more local/residential area). So I concluded that we should go to one of our favorites around here because we are moving to a new apartment next week and it would be less to come around here.
We checked the daily special at the closest restaurant on the middle of hill. If anything had looked good, we would have gone to the other one, but I saw a dish I wanted.
We started with Red wine with bread and olives as usual. So many gentlemen were enjoying their lunch and wine too.
This is my choice, Arroz de Pato.
His: Espetadas Acheira
My duck rice tastes amazing! It reminds me of grandma’s takikomi-gohan, a Japanese mixed rice.
We thought too much food to finish, but we took our time and did! It was so delicious 🙂
Couldn’t finish 0.5L wine tho…
My dessert: Mousse de Manga, his: Doce da Casa
I ordered ‘cafe normal (regular espresso)’. It was stronger but still manageable and good.
Another great lunch experience for 8 euros per person. We still can’t believe how wonderful this deal is!!!
We walked to Saldanha area to pick up an insurance card at the agency.
Checking Mercado de 31 Janeiro
There was a nice pastry shop in the market.
Also a special shop for spices, dry fruits and teas. I would come back here to get some teas.
After a quick stop by the agency, we went to a mall to look for a pair of shoes for him in Saldanha.
We decided to walk 10 minutes to another mall. On the way, there was a menu board for great deal of snacking and drinks.
Since our dinner time is too early to dine out, we try to enjoy lunch at a restaurant every other day or so.
We have a favorite restaurant one minute away from home, but today he picked a new one in the neighborhood.
It seems like just another restaurant.
The restaurant was almost full when we arrived around 12:30pm. A good sign!
We spent some time to figure what to order as usual by googling or translating. They offer a menu do dia, which includes bread, olives, drink, dessert and coffee.
Now I have a strategy. When I don’t know what to order, I would go with one on the top, usually one the restaurant is most confident of. They said it was pork cheek and it sounded good to me.
Although we order a glass wine, they brought more than 500ml wine in a carafe. Very intimidating. Really?
I couldn’t finish my share but a gentleman next to us finish 500ml all by himself. I think he is not special but at Portuguese standard. Btw, olives always taste so good 🙂
Mine: Bochechas de Porco Assadas no Forno, the cheek was very tender and perfect with red wine.
His: Frango de Caril (Chicken Curry)
The lady brought a set of desserts for us to see what is what. How nice!
He chose almond caramel something…I think this is ‘Baba de Camelo’ caramel mousse.
I have another rule. I try ‘Doce da Casa’ whenever available. This was so delicious!
Un cafe cheio to close the meal. An amazing deal for 7.50 euro per person.
Grocery shopping on the way home.
Checking a fish market
Curious about all different seafood, but didn’t buy anything.
A butcher next to it
Very overwhelming
I bought a thin steak beef and cheese (total 3.25 euro). Panados might be a good option next time.
Two more stops to buy some vegetables and pastries. Then I had to stop another to pick up alho (garlic).
Dinner @ 6:30pm: Soup, We didn’t get hungry at all for the big lunch.
8am: Chicken & Mushroom Risotto + Hot Tea because it was so cold this morning
10:30am: Small sandwich
Lunch @ 1pm on the way to grocery shopping
This is a typical fast food menu in Lisbon.
He ordered a combo of Kebab Sandwich, fries & drink. I had an 1 euro sandwich (left).
I expected it would be much smaller but it was actually more than enough. Probably meat is a half or 1/3 portion of the regular one (2.80 euro) and bread is the same size. Taste wise, we liked the one from last week better.
This restaurant quickly became one of our favorites.
The owner/chef was standing at the door, so we greeted him “Bom dia!” and asked about the Sunday special. I always wanted to try ‘Cozido Á Portuguesa’
Starting with Azeitonas (olives), Pão (bread), Vinho Tinto & Branco (red & white wine)
Prato do dia Peixe: Carapaus Assados (daily special fish)
Prato do dia carne: Cozido Á Portuguesa (daily special meat)
Sobremesas: Pudim & Doce da Casa (dessert: pudding & house special)
Cafe Chieo (finishing the meal with great coffee)
Unlike 8 euro weekday lunch special here, it’s not prix fixe menu, but still an amazing deal! I really love the house dessert, which is similar to blanc manger.
Skipped dinner for a big lunch. He had a bowl of chicken soup.
Second breakfast @ 8am: Ham & Cheese Sandwich + Chips, Earl Grey
Around 11am, I went to a pastelaria close by to get some pastries. Since we had an appointment with our realtor at noon, we would like to eat beforehands.
One with sausage and the other with coconut flavor. Both are ok.
After the appointment, we had to come home straight to let a plumber in and work. So I picked up kebab sandwich to go. It was nice to have something tasting familiar.
Since we were very hungry, we split a nata, which I bought this morning. Nata is always good but I want to taste the best one.
The sandwich was too big and I skipped dinner while he had some microwavable meal (sorry).
