Lunch @ Sabores Da Penha

He suggested to go to one of our favorites for lunch today. It’s located on top of hill but we need to go pick up the rest of our stuff at Airbnb nearby, so it was actually a great idea.

IMG_2361
We ordered pratos do dia and two glass of wine, red for him and white for me. The lady asked us if “natural (room temperature)” is ok. I asked for “fresco (chilled)” instead. We understood almost everything she said and it was so smooth to choose side order. I was tearing because we knew nothing at the first time here.

IMG_2362
Glasses are full of wine as always. Portuguese wine never disappoints us!

Mine: Tiras de chocos con arroz e salada 5€

His: Alheira con ovo 5€ (bread sausage under egg)

If they don’t have Doce da Casa, we would skip a dessert but they did! Happy!!! It’s interesting to taste Doce da Casa at all different restaurants. This one tastes more cream instead condensed milk.

IMG_2372.jpg
Cafe cheio is so good too!

Total: 15.10€ + 1€ tip

The gentleman in the counter thought I was Chinese and was so surprised when I told him I didn’t speak Chinese. Japanese is so minor in the world and I share a hurtful feeling when a Portuguese person is being confused with Spanish…

The Best Doce Da Casa!

IMG_2275
He found this place and wanted to try.

IMG_2278
It’s huge but got full quickly.

IMG_2279.jpg
A gentleman, looking like the boss or owner here asked us if we would like English menu, but I asked Portuguese. Then he brought this one.

IMG_2280.jpg
I noticed that the menu didn’t include Today’s special so asked a lady to bring the other one everyone else had. Here it is! I feel a little bothered all good stuff and lower priced items are not available on the menu that we are initially provided. It happened at other places. I really want to stick with restaurants who don’t care about English but do business in only Portuguese 🙂

IMG_2281
There is no lunch set here. We ordered a glass of wine anyway. Now we realize that price changes depending on a neighborhood, of course.

IMG_2283
Mine: Peixe Espada Frito 7.50€

IMG_2284
His: Salmão Grelhado 8.75€

We want to try our favorite dessert, Doce da Casa, but they didn’t have one.

Total: 18.45€ including glass wine 1.10€ x2

It’s still a good deal for good quality of meal, but Calçada 28 is the best for overall. No one can beat their 8€ all inclusive lunch with 500ml amazing wine, dessert and cafe.

We are happy about the new apartment but definitely miss the neighborhood of Airbnb.

IMG_2309.jpg
Good thing we still need to go there to move rest of our stuff. Then we saw a familiar face here at the snack bar and asked him if they had Doce da Casa. They did!

IMG_2317.jpg
How gorgeous it is!!! It looks and tastes amazing. He says this is the best Doce da Casa among three of them we tried. I agree. Total 5.20€ (I assume 2€ for the dessert).

We should definitely come back this neighborhood often in the future.

My Birthday Lunch @ Calçada 28

I had been thinking where to go for my birthday lunch last couple weeks since he asked me. There are so many places I want to try in Lisbon, especially city center, but it seems so overpriced since we found the great deals of lunch special in our neighborhood (more local/residential area). So I concluded that we should go to one of our favorites around here because we are moving to a new apartment next week and it would be less to come around here.

IMG_1569
We checked the daily special at the closest restaurant on the middle of hill. If anything had looked good, we would have gone to the other one, but I saw a dish I wanted.

IMG_1570.jpg
We started with Red wine with bread and olives as usual. So many gentlemen were enjoying their lunch and wine too.

IMG_1572
This is my choice, Arroz de Pato.

IMG_1575
My duck rice tastes amazing! It reminds me of grandma’s takikomi-gohan, a Japanese mixed rice.

We thought too much food to finish, but we took our time and did! It was so delicious 🙂

IMG_1577
Couldn’t finish 0.5L wine tho…

IMG_1578
My dessert: Mousse de Manga, his: Doce da Casa

IMG_1581
I ordered ‘cafe normal (regular espresso)’. It was stronger but still manageable and good.

Another great lunch experience for 8 euros per person. We still can’t believe how wonderful this deal is!!!

We walked to Saldanha area to pick up an insurance card at the agency.

IMG_1591
Checking Mercado de 31 Janeiro

IMG_1592
There was a nice pastry shop in the market.

IMG_1595
Also a special shop for spices, dry fruits and teas. I would come back here to get some teas.

IMG_1597
After a quick stop by the agency, we went to a mall to look for a pair of shoes for him in Saldanha.

IMG_1600
We decided to walk 10 minutes to another mall. On the way, there was a menu board for great deal of snacking and drinks.

IMG_1601
Our favorite mall, El Corte Inglés

IMG_1608
Then we found cute shoes! I love them.

Menu do Dia @ Irmãs Cadima

Since our dinner time is too early to dine out, we try to enjoy lunch at a restaurant every other day or so.

We have a favorite restaurant one minute away from home, but today he picked a new one in the neighborhood.

IMG_1531
It seems like just another restaurant.

IMG_1536
The restaurant was almost full when we arrived around 12:30pm. A good sign!

IMG_1532
We spent some time to figure what to order as usual by googling or translating. They offer a menu do dia, which includes bread, olives, drink, dessert and coffee.

Now I have a strategy. When I don’t know what to order, I would go with one on the top, usually one the restaurant is most confident of. They said it was pork cheek and it sounded good to me.

IMG_1533.jpg
Although we order a glass wine, they brought more than 500ml wine in a carafe. Very intimidating. Really?

IMG_1535-1
I couldn’t finish my share but a gentleman next to us finish 500ml all by himself. I think he is not special but at Portuguese standard. Btw, olives always taste so good 🙂

IMG_1537
Mine: Bochechas de Porco Assadas no Forno, the cheek was very tender and perfect with red wine.

IMG_1538.jpg
His: Frango de Caril (Chicken Curry)

IMG_1542
The lady brought a set of desserts for us to see what is what. How nice!

IMG_1543
He chose almond caramel something…I think this is ‘Baba de Camelo’ caramel mousse.

IMG_1545
I have another rule. I try ‘Doce da Casa’ whenever available. This was so delicious!

IMG_1546
Un cafe cheio to close the meal. An amazing deal for 7.50 euro per person.

Grocery shopping on the way home.

IMG_1548
Checking a fish market

IMG_1547
Curious about all different seafood, but didn’t buy anything.

IMG_1553
A butcher next to it

IMG_1551
Very overwhelming

IMG_1552.jpg
I bought a thin steak beef and cheese (total 3.25 euro). Panados might be a good option next time.

Two more stops to buy some vegetables and pastries. Then I had to stop another to pick up alho (garlic).

Dinner @ 6:30pm: Soup, We didn’t get hungry at all for the big lunch.
